A nonprofit corporation is a type of a corporation that may be created for any lawful purpose, or purposes permitted by state law. The income of a nonprofit cannot be distributed to members, directors, or officers. A nonprofit is not automatically exempt from federal or state taxes. To become exempt, a nonprofit organization must meet certain requirements and apply with both the Internal Revenue Service and the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.
